ZOOMLION’s Ultra-large Tonnage Tower Cranes Shipped in Batch to Assist in Building Tanzania’s Largest Hydropower Station

2020-12-15

Recently, several Zoomlion’s ultra-large tonnage tower cranes were transported from Zoomlion’s smart factory in Changde to Africa to assist in the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project in Tanzania, another highlight to Africa’s largest infrastructure project under construction.

▲ Schematic: Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project

The Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project is the largest water conservancy project in Africa with a total installed capacity of 2115 MW, with which Tanzania’s total installed hydropower capacity will become about 3.7 times higher than the current amount — around 562MW. It will outperform Egypt’s Aswan High Dam (2100 MW), Mozambique’s Cahora Bassa Dam (2075 MW) and Angola’s Lauca Dam (2069 MW) in installed capacity and become as influential across Africa as the Three Gorges Dam in China.

It is reported that the project, located in the lower reaches of the Rufiji River in Tanzania, manly includes a dam and its auxiliary structures. When main works are built, tower cranes with high stability, security and micro-motion performance will be required at key positions of the dam to hoist electromechanical equipment and materials for the hydropower station. Our client is a consortium consisting of a top three architecture company and the largest power plant construction company in Egypt, which represent the best in the fields of infrastructure and power equipment in Egypt and even in the Middle East and Africa with extremely high requirements for equipment quality.

At the beginning, the project’s owner and supervisor favored European crane manufacturers without even placing Chinese manufacturers on the bid invitation list. However, through frequent technological exchanges, Zoomlion’s technological department in the Middle East and Africa presented the scheme of non-standard hoisting and practical cases from other key projects to the client. Relevant employees also paid many visits to the client’s headquarters in Egypt for meetings when the COVID-19 pandemic ran riot. At last, satisfied with T600-32U’s quality, as well as our delivery time and hoisting scheme, the client/owner placed two orders: two sets in the initial order and three sets in the following order.

T600-32/25U, a best-selling equipment item among Zoomlion 4.0 products, is efficient, reliable and intelligent and incorporates the technology of the German company Jost. It features a simple structure with smooth stress and long service life and has leading edges in several performance functions.

At the construction site, Zoomlion’s T600-32/25U tower cranes cater to the requirements of “smooth operation and targeted movement” for PC module hoisting and construction with its lifting capability and micro-motion (moving speed can drop to 5mm/s). In the scenario where a cluster of tower cranes operate together, flat-top tower cranes that take up less space especially show a competitive edge over other types. Evenly distributed around the building, Zoomlion’s T600-32/25U tower cranes enable full coverage across the project. They are responsible for hoisting most of the project’s materials, and help the client accurately install heavy construction equipment as well as electromechanical equipment.

Zoomlion’s Tower Cranes On the Way to Tanzania in Africa.

Like all other key projects benefiting from Zoomlion’s quality tower cranes along the Belt and Road, the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project reflects Zoomlion’s active engagement in overseas projects for mutual benefit, win-win results and increased international influence. It is learned that Zoomlion’s tower cranes have also played fantastic roles in major projects such as the new airport in Kuwait, Jaher Hospital , Qatar World Cup stadiums, and Kuwait University’s new campus Phases 1 and 2.

In the future, for the purpose of sustainable development in overseas markets, Zoomlion will build and upgrade overseas production bases in a faster pace, continue to establish and improve channel networks, strengthen its service parts support system and technical personnel training system, further its engagement in construction projects along the Belt and Road, and build manufacturing clusters that serve local markets.
